Tai Chi or Qigong is a gentle mind-body exercise originating from ancient China, which is now practised around the world as an effective way of achieving good health and vitality.
It is a moving meditation using a series of gentle exercises that creates balance between the mind and body; ultimately to cultivate our energy (qi) to flow smoothly and powerfully by releasing stagnant or blocked qi, alleviates pain, stiffness and improves circulation which overall builds optimal health. This is the main reason why it is so popular for people around the world plus it's suitable for all ages and fitness levels. So if you have difficulties sitting still doing meditation, perhaps moving meditation with Tai Chi or Qigong is worth considering. It is a spiritual experience as much as a physical one.
Tai Chi /Qigong movements are fluid, graceful and gentle; while breathing is deep and slow, thus aiding visual and mental concentration. This aligns your body, mind and spirit at the same time, creating a sense of peace and wellbeing.
Movements are designed to equally balance the yin and yang (opposite forces that complement each other). It also encourages the meridians (lines of energy flow) within the body to flow, hence it is almost like having an acupuncture treatment!
There are many styles of Tai Chi with just as many names but overall the ultimate goal is to achieve optimal health and wellbeing by slowing down the mind-body and not allow the stresses of everyday living create disharmony within the body.
Tai Chi & Qigong is easy to learn, it's a life long journey that can be practiced at deeper levels in time. It can also be practised anywhere, on your own or in a class environment.
